Tata Steel's European service centre network supplies and processes over four million tonnes of steel each year, making it the largest of its kind in Europe.

With 60 service centres strategically positioned across the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands, it provides customers with local level service and a comprehensive range of products and processing services.

To meet customers' needs most effectively, Tata Steel's service centre network is organized into three areas. These include multi product service centres which have the capability to supply a wide range of steel products and processing services into a cross-section of industries.

To meet the more specialised product and processing requirements of certain market sectors, Tata Steel has developed a network of sector service centres. These include automotive service centres; plate processing centres; hot-rolled processing centres; and businesses focused on servicing the coil slitting, building products and consumer products sectors.

For low volume users, metal shops provide easy access to an extensive range of steel products which offer immediate collection facilities, as well as a local delivery service.

Ongoing investment ensures that all material processing facilities are the most advanced, from laser cutting and welding, to slitting, sawing, 600 tonne press blanking and multi-stand blanking. This provides the capability to supply steel to first stage of manufacture.

In addition, the latest stock management, logistics and I.T.-systems ensure that each business can meet requirements for short lead times and small quantity orders, as well as high-volume just-in-time deliveries.

The right choice of material leads to more efficient production processes, better products and better profits for our customers. The Support Engineers from our Customer Technical Services Department are on hand to provide practical advice to ensure the perfect match for your application. Support Engineers help you to make the right material choice and can quantify the benefits for your applications. For example, the use of higher-strength steels, MagiZinc^®, or our branded product ranges Ympress^®, Ymagine^® or Ymvit^®. Furthermore, we can help optimise your material choice for a variety of processes including laser cutting and welding.

Troubleshooting and cost reduction assesments are also services we offer. These services give our customers the opportunity to get the most out of our products.

The main objective of Tata Steel RD&T is to enhance the competitive position of Tata Steel by executing research and development projects that provide a base from which business units can supply value added products and services to their customers as well as apply cost effective process technology.
Tata Steel RD&T seeks to find the best possible metals based solutions for the major markets of Tata Steel as well as to continuously improve production processes with respect to quality, cost as well as protection of the environment.
In doing this, Tata Steel RD&T co-operates with all major business units of Tata Steel to add high-level technological knowledge and expertise to the products they supply and in supporting their customers in the various market sectors.
To achieve this goal, the latest methods and techniques in process analysis and design, product design, modelling / simulation and prototyping are used.
Large-scale test facilities permit the testing of new products on an industrial scale, including customer processes such as can making, production of blanks for car parts, brazing of aluminium radiator elements, corrosion testing of civil constructions, etc.

Tata Steel RD&T co-operates with universities and research institutes all over the world as well as, through the separate business units, with key customers in the automotive, transport, packaging and construction areas.

Vast knowledge in the metallurgical and processes area allows the researchers of Tata Steel RD&T to tailor material properties to the needs of specific markets.
In the Product Application Centres of Tata Steel RD&T, both the knowledge and the equipment to investigate material performance in end products are available.

Some examples of available testing and measuring equipment:
• computerised strain measurement systems (including transportable systems for use on the customer's site);
• friction and galling testers;
• equipment for tensile, plane strain, compression, shear and bulge test
• welding equipment and apparatus for weld testing;
• test equipment for adhesive bonding;
• equipment for component testing, e.g. stiffness test rig, dent resistance test equipment, fatigue testers, 3D co-ordinate measuring equipment;
• facilities for outdoor exposure testing and accelerated corrosion testing;
• equipment for physical testing of coated products;

• surface treatment and coating equipment.

Experimental work is supported by advanced modelling and simulation techniques, which are also used for supporting customers in product design.
Software tools include Autoform, PamStamp, PamCrash, Pro/Engineer, Ansys, Abaqus as well as DiekA finite element software.
