Environmental and health impact of our products

For many years now, we have been paying close attention to the influence our site has on the environment, all production processes are ISO14001 certificated. Tata Steel IJmuiden BV is increasingly extending this concern, continuously searching for sustainability factors elsewhere in the chain:

  • For some years past, Tata Steel IJmuiden BV has been observing the environmental performance of suppliers of ores and coal. Tata Steel intends to stimulate environmental activities and the protection of the environment in the extraction, processing and transportation of these raw materials;
  • The transport of our products is an inherent part of integrated chain management, and one on which we can have a direct influence. Over recent years, Tata Steel IJmuiden BV has been implementing the possibility of shifting transport from road to rail and inland navigation (a 'modal shift'). Not only are the alternatives often more efficient, transport by water offers a good alternative to further  congestion on the roads;
  • Many of Tata Steel Strip Products IJmuiden's customers would like to create a sustainable life cycle for their products. We advise product designers and help them to minimize the use of scarce natural resources and also to make the best of the possibilities of low-energy and recyclable products;
  • At the end of the life cycle of steel products or products that incorporate steel, the steel is reclaimed. Almost all of the scrap produced in society is re-used as a raw material in the steel industry. Using recycled steel lowers the use of raw materials, which also means less  need to transport new materials to the production facilities, delivering fuel savings and lowering the environmental impact of the transport of raw ore.
