Dual Phase Steel

Dual phase steels are hot dip galvanised high-strength steels with a dual phase microstructure consisting of a fine dispersion of hard martensite particles in a soft pure ferrite matrix. This microstructure provides a combination of high strength, good energy absorption characteristics and ductility with good forming capabilities.
European standard EN 10336 covers continuously hot-dip and electrolytically coated strip and sheet of multiphase steels with higher yield strength for cold forming. Tata Steel Strip Products IJmuiden has developed steel according to grade HCT600X+Z/ZF (DP600GI/GA) and grade HCT780X+Z (DP800GI), which comply with the European standard EN 10336, 2007 and is developing a HCT980X+Z product.

Dual Phase Benefits

Dual Phase Steels are formable Advanced High-Strength Steels which have a high strain hardening capacity, enhancing strain redistribution and thus providing good drawability. Work hardening during forming gives a high yield strength in the finished parts. The combination of high strength and ductility and the capacity for strain hardening leads to excellent fatigue properties and good energy absorption characteristics, making these steels suitable for structural and reinforcement components particularly in the crash structure.
Furthermore, these properties can be further enhanced by strain hardening combined with a bake-hardening effect, offering an excellent potential for weight savings in structural parts.

Applications

Grades HCT600X+Z/ZF and HCT780X+Z can be used for structural and reinforcement components, such as:

  • crash boxes
  • support components
  • A-, B- and C-pillars in cars
  • box girders for chassis
